My 5th wheel is currently parked in Mesa, AZ year round. In the winter, AZ offers awesome weather! Late Spring thru early Fall though the temperatures are 100* or higher EVERY day. The heat is just brutal. The mornings and evenings offer very little relief with some days the temps only getting into the lower 90s overnight.
Staying cool on those hot days can be a real challenge. I happen to live in an RV resort with four pools and that helps tremendously! However, I can’t live in the pool (though I sometimes make an effort to try!). Sunburn is a concern and cooking at the pool is sort of frowned on as well. Plus, there are some serious safety concerns when you start sleeping in the water.
Luckily, I do have three air conditioners in my RV. Two on the roof and one portable. Those three keep the 5th wheel comfortable even while cooking in the overwhelming AZ heat. Some days it is still too warm to do much but sit around and read, but that’s not a bad way to spend an afternoon anyway so I am not complaining.
Keeping my A/C in good working condition is of very high importance. I clean my A/C filters at least once a month! It is not hard to do and I can literally feel the difference in how effective my A/C is on those hotter than hot days.
I also use my shades and the awning to keep the worst of the sun off the windows which does seem to help with minimizing heat build up. A few of my windows also sport that shiny stuff…Reflectix. That’s the silver insulation that usually comes in a roll and can be cut to block out the sun in almost any window. It does help, but you also loose a lot of natural light. I use it sparingly so my home doesn’t take on a gloomy, oppressive feel.
Would love to hear from other RVers on what you do to keep your RV cool when temperatures climb over 90…
